Doris Day Turns 95 (not 93): Her Birthday Surprise

Happy 93. . .er. . .95th birthday, Doris Day! Celebrate the beloved star and animal activist by sending some love to her four-legged friends.

Beloved screen legend and animal activist Doris Day got an early birthday surprise yesterday when The Associated Press revealed that she’s not turning 93 today as expected, but is actually two years older. The AP obtained Day’s actual birth certificate, which lists her birth year as 1922. The ebullient star of movies including The Pajama Game (1957), Pillow Talk (1959), which earned her an Academy Award nomination, and That Touch of Mink (1962) took the news in stride and celebrated her newfound age in a statement.

“I’ve always said that age is just a number and I have never paid much attention to birthdays, but it’s great to finally know how old I really am!” Day said.

After retiring from acting, Day has devoted much of her time to working as an animal welfare advocate. She was one of the founding members of Actors and Others for Animals, along with other stars who wanted to use their celebrity to raise awareness about the unfair treatment of animals. She also founded the Doris Day Animal League, a national non-profit citizens’ lobbying organization to give a legislative voice to the cause, and the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF), a national non-profit with a mission “to help animals and the people who love them.”

To celebrate Doris, the DDAF is asking fans to post a photo of their pets on social media using the hashtag #DorisBirthdayWish and tag @ddaf_org. The top submissions will be used to make a digital birthday card for Doris. The legendary star and animal lover’s biggest birthday wish is to raise awareness and support for the cause she holds so close to her heart. Visit DDAF for ways to donate to its mission.
