We asked our Facebook fans to share their deepest fears when it comes to scary movies. Here’s what they had to say. . .
We’ve all got one – that movie that you can just barely watch through squinted eyes while safely buried under a blanket (and maybe with the lights on). To celebrate the spookiest month of the year, we asked our Facebook fans to name the actors who have portrayed the scariest movie characters ever. Here are the top eight who have been haunting your dreams and bringing your nightmares to life.
8. Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho
Charming, handsome, wealthy… and absolutely insane. In this blood-curdling horror film, Christian Bale redefined a generation’s definition of “too good to be true.” The living embodiment of the ills of ’80s America, with its greed, materialism, and arrogance, Bale (as Patrick Bateman) was a Wall Street schmuck by day and unhinged serial killer by night… watching Bale run around naked and bloody with a chainsaw in his hand was disturbing but also disturbingly good times.
7. Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs
“Clarice.” Does your spine still tingle at the thought of Hannibal Lecter’s voice whispering her name? The man who gave new meaning to “some fava beans and a nice Chianti” traumatized moviegoers around the world with his appetite for humans and his quiet thoughts behind his psycho man muzzle. And the lambs still haven’t stopped screaming.
6. Sissy Spacek as Carrie in Carrie
We see more than her “dirty pillows.” High school was rough for a lot of us, but Sissy Spacek as blood-soaked “prom queen” Carrie took the horrors of being a teen to a whole other level. If only every high school reject had the power of telekinesis — without the holy-rolling psycho mom factor, of course. . .
5. Tim Curry as Pennywise in IT
“Hey, kid, come here!” giggled shark-toothed Pennywise the Clown (played by Tim Curry) as he looked out from a gutter, ready to eat any gullible child who came across his path. Your irrational fear of clowns just got rational. Thanks a lot, Tim. Maybe we’ll stick to Hook.
4. Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates in Psycho
Inspired by real-life murderer Ed Gein, Anthony Perkins’s portrayal of the hotel manager with some deadly mommy issues (creepy white wig and all) had all of us checking behind the shower curtain.

3. Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance in The Shining
A frustrated writer and family, an isolated hotel in the woods…and a few bone-chilling omens (e.g. naked old decaying ladies in the bathtub, freakishly manicured twins, a river of blood in the hallway)… What could possibly go wrong? Jack Nicholson’s descent into madness has kept more than a few of you up at night. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
2. Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger in Nightmare on Elm Street
When we said these characters haunted your dreams, we weren’t kidding. With his razor claws and cheese pizza face, horror icon Robert Englund was our fans’ second most popular answer as Freddy Krueger, the killer in your sleep, the soul sucker of innocent children! Whatever you do, don’t sing your kids to sleep with this one: One two, Freddy’s coming for you / Three, four, better lock your door / Five, Six, grab your crucifix / Seven, eight, better stay up late / Nine, Ten, never sleep again.
1. Linda Blair as Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist
Poor possessed Regan was the number one actress who never let us look at demon possession in children the same way again. And let’s not talk about the whole projectile vomiting and head spinning scene — just the thought of it scares the bejesus out of us. But we guess that’s the point.
