Today is the 20th anniversary since we lost Frank Zappa—the musician, artist, producer, film director, inventor of out-of-this-world kids’ names, and a slew of other labels.
Fusing a mix of rock, jazz, and electroaccoustic sounds, Zappa carved a place for himself in music history that is legendary, unique, and unrivaled. Even today, his experimental work has been hard to categorize for music buffs.
Although he started out in his early years as a band member of The Mothers of Invention, Zappa spent most of his 30-year-career as a solo artist, garnering critical acclaim and influencing numerous composers and musicians. He also managed to get married (and stay married til his death) and have four children: Dweezil, Ahmet, Diva, and Moon Unit. For those who aren’t familiar with Zappa’s work, you can imagine the kind of original artistry that came out of his mind just by looking at his kids’ names. Pretty far out, right?
