Holy meow! Celebrate National Cat Day with a look at some famous feline fanatics and their adorable kitties.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! That’s right, it’s National Cat Day! Can you believe the world’s greatest holiday is only a decade old? Particularly surprising since cats have held such a prominent place in history. Charles Lindbergh’s cat Patsy famously accompanied the aviator on flights, Winston Churchill’s kitty was rumored to attend cabinet meetings (ahem, cats are smart!), and Edgar Allen Poe not only owned a black cat, but his feline inspired his short story “The Black Cat.” Charles Dickens once said, “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” – and not only do many historical figures hold that truth to be self-evident, some of today’s biggest celebrities agree. Did you know that many of your favorite stars are crazy cat people just like us? Well, we’ve compiled an assortment of some of our fave feline fanatics. Check out this meow mix!
Cee Lo Green
Rapper and record mogul Cee Lo Green has a Persian pussycat named Purrfect who truly lives up to his name! He’s a prolific Twitter user from his “iPawd” and tweets out such Internet gold as “you’re looking purrfect tunaite” at fellow cat-ophile Taylor Swift. And talk about a purrfect couple: Cee Lo and his four-legged friend made beautiful music together for charity with a remix of the “Meow Mix” jingle. Between seasons of sitting in the judge’s lap on the The Voice and hanging in the recording studio, this cool cat definitely hits all the right notes!
Hollywood hunk James Franco has always been a feline fanatic. The Oscar-nominated actor says of his family, “We were raised as cat people.” And his great love for cats has only grown in adulthood; he fell in love with two fluffy sisters from the set of his film Homefront and ended up adopting the co-stars Max and Lux. And not only did his notorious cat fever earn him a cat calendar from Ellen when he was a guest on her talk show, he’s also said that when he gets sad he talks to his cat about it and it cheers him up. Awww, well, don’t we all?
Comedian Russell Brand is simply mad about his cat “Morrissey,” whom he named after the Smiths frontman and fellow cat-lover. Even though the Rock of Ages star is known as a ladies man, he says he’s more likely to be found sitting at home with his cat, eating cereal and looking out the window – and even calls his beloved companion “the supreme being of the home” and a “gangster cat” for his many hunting kills. Sounds like the outrageous showman found the perfect compatriot; he shares Russell’s no-holds-barred cattitude and does things his way!
Media maven Martha Stewart maintains a small army of well-heeled kitties at her Bedford estate in Westchester County, New York, where she’s kept the company of such distinguished felines as Persian sisters Empress Tang and Princess Peony, brothers Electra and Sirius, and Himalayans Verdi and Vivaldi. Crafty diva Martha even made a cat perch from a fallen tree on her property – and if you want homemaking ideas for your own little bundle of fluff, check out her website for a helpful how-to on making a cat toy out of a baby sock. Oh, Martha, Martha, Martha!
