When it comes to falling in and out of love with the same person, some celebrities don’t know when to quit…
National Reconciliation Day, held April 2nd every year, is a time to mend fences, reunite with estranged loved ones, and remember Gandhi’s wise words: “Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” In honor of the day, we’re taking a look at 10 memorable celebrity reconciliations, from Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton‘s two trips to the altar to Rihanna and Chris Brown‘s romantic bounce-back after being found guilty of felony assault charges on the pop princess.
Natalie Wood & Robert Wagner (married 1957-1962 and 1972-1981)
When Natalie Wood (Rebel Without a Cause, Splendor in the Grass, West Side Story) was just 10-years-old, she told her mother that she was going to marry Robert Wagner, best known later on for his starring role in the TV series Hart to Hart. Well her wish came true not once, but twice. The pair went on a first date set up by the studio and married in 1957 amidst protest from her mother. After divorcing in 1962, she married film producer Richard Gregson before giving Wagner a second chance. Wood and Wagner remarried in 1972 and were together until her mysterious drowning while on a boat trip to Catalina Island in 1981. Many theorized that Wagner was involved with her death because the spouses were passionately arguing before she disappeared and she was found with bruises on her body.
Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton (married 1964-1974 and 1975-1976)
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s relationship has been deemed “the most turbulent love story ever told.” The two fell in love on the set of 1963’s Cleopatra while both were married to other people. The Vatican even called their coupling as “erotic vagrancy.” The scandalous pair, known as much for their public displays of passion as their chronic fighting and alcoholism, first married in 1964, but divorced in 1974 due to Burton’s infidelity. They remarried just a year later, but divorced again in 1976. In 1982, the two, who co-starred in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? showed up arm in arm for the violet-eyed beauty’s 50 birthday. Part of the couple’s legacy is the 68-carat Taylor-Burton Diamond.
Don Johnson & Melanie Griffith (married 1976 and 1989-1996)
When 14-year-old Melanie Griffith moved in with 22-year-old and twice-divorced Don Johnson, it became one of the most controversial celebrity pairings of all time due to her young age. The couple married in 1976 when Griffith was 18, but divorced just six months later. After Griffith went to rehab for her struggles with cocaine and alcohol abuse, the couple gave marriage another try and tied the knot for the second time in 1989. In 1994, they broke up and got together one more time before finally divorcing in 1996.
Danny DeVito & Rhea Perlman (married 1982, separated October 2012, reconciled 2013)
Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman moved in together in 1971 just two weeks after they met at a performance of the play, The Shrinking Bride, featuring DeVito. But it was over a decade later, in 1983, when the couple tied the knot. The pair’s personal life wasn’t exactly the subject of tabloid fodder until they announced they were separating after 30-years of marriage (and more than 40-years together) in October 2012. However, just five months after the announcement, the former co-stars of the ’70s sitcom Taxi reconciled and are still together.
Sean Penn & Robin Wright (married 1996-2010)
Shortly after his marriage to Madonna ended, Sean Penn met Robin Wright on the set of State of Grace in 1990 and the two began dating. They had two children together before walking down the aisle in 1996. After 11 years of wedded bliss, the couple filed for divorce in 2007, but called off the proceedings several months later. Penn then filed for a legal separation in 2009, which was once again withdrawn after yet another reconciliation. Two months later, Wright filed for divorce for a second time and the dissolution of their marriage became official in 2010.
Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones (married 2000, separated 2013, reconciled 2014)
Just nine months after they began dating in 1999, Michael Douglas popped the question to Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is 25 years his junior. The actors met the year prior at a film festival in France and married in 2000. After 13 years of marriage, the couple announced their separation in August 2013. But after Douglas’s battle with tongue cancer and Zeta-Jones’s hospitalizations for bipolar disorder, they soon reunited. In true Hollywood style, they made their reunion official by walking a red carpet together in 2014.
Kobe &Vanessa Bryant (married 2001, separated 2011, reconciled 2013)
Vanessa Bryant took a page out of Tammy Wynette’s playbook and stood by her man when Kobe Bryant, her husband of just two years, was charged with rape. Three days after being charged, the NBA superstar bought his wife an eight-carat, $4 million purple diamond ring as a “thank you”/”I’m sorry” gift. Kobe was later acquitted, and the couple remained solid until 2011 when Vanessa filed for divorce. The pair reconciled and stopped the divorce proceedings in 2013.
Eminem & Kim Mathers (married 1999-2001 and 2006)
Fans were shocked when Eminem reconciled with his ex-wife, Kim Mathers, after rapping about killing her in his 2000 song “Kim.” The high school sweethearts began dating in 1989 and had a daughter, Hailie, in 1995. They made their union official in 1999, but divorced just two years later in 2001 amidst allegations of infidelity. Despite these lyrics in “Kim” – “Now bleed, b*tch, bleed” – the twosome married for a second time in 2006 only to split again three months later.
Rihanna & Chris Brown (On and off from 2007)
When Rihanna attended Chris Brown’s 18th birthday in 2007, romance rumors sparked. But the couple didn’t confirm their relationship until 2008. A year later, after attending a pre-Grammy party, the singers got into a physical fight over sexual text messages on Brown’s phone leaving the Barbadian pop star with a swollen lip and black eye. Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault and criminal threats charges. Three years later, the pair reunited for musical collaborations (remixes of her “Birthday Cake” and his “Turn Up the Music”) and are caught kissing at various events. They reportedly broke up again in 2013.
Katy Perry & John Mayer (On and off from 2012)
Pop star Katy Perry might want to take frenemy Taylor Swift’s song, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” to heart when it comes to singer/songwriter John Mayer, who is known for his serial celebrity dating (i.e., Swift, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston). The couple has been on and off since 2012 and even collaborated on the song, “Who You Love” in 2013. The pair broke up in 2014 only to hook back up again earlier this year. Current status? According to reports, the musical duo broke up again a few weeks ago.
