The Golden Globe winner teases upcoming baby mama drama on the critically acclaimed CW show.
Every TV season produces at least one critical darling but there hasn’t been an underdog in a while that is so universally adored and praised as The CW’s Jane the Virgin.
Much of the credit goes to its very likable leading lady Gina Rodriguez, who became a breakout star seemingly overnight after the series premiered last fall.
Validation came swiftly: Last month, Rodriguez, the rookie, won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Comedy, impressively beating out the likes of Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep).
Rodriguez, 30, plays the title character, a 23-year-old virgin who is accidentally artificially inseminated by her doctor in the charming series that’s an adaptation of a Venezuelan telenovela.
Bio recently spent some time on the Manhattan Beach set of Jane the Virgin, where we got some scoop as Gina Rodriguez teased TV reporters on a big scare that shakes Jane, the baby’s dramatic delivery later this season, and which beau she hopes Jane ultimately ends up with.
In tonight’s episode, when Jane and Rafael have the ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby, a medical issue is discovered. What can you tell us about what to expect?
She is going to go through something that is very, very scary for Jane. She is going through this process of, This is not what I wanted, this is not what I expected, but she is a woman of faith and she believes that God has a plan for you…whatever that may be. When these detrimental, terrifying, life-threatening things happen, it’s a great opportunity to see Jane growing as a woman.
She is going to start transforming as a woman and feeling this beautiful baby inside of her and her connection to it. We’re going to see how that’s going to play out, both in terms of the baby — and her relationship with Rafael.
How has it been wearing the fake baby bump as Jane’s pregnancy progresses on screen?
It’s no joke! It’s an 8-10 pound baby bump that I strap on and am carrying around on set… It’s heavier than it seems. It’s the best birth control [laughs] — at least until I’m ready.
Will you be having the baby by season’s end?
Yeah, I think we ARE having the baby this season; it will be in the season finale…it’s gonna have people going whhhhaaaa#@$%*&!!!
Are you ready for having babies on the set?
I used to be a nanny, so I’m sort of a baby whisperer. Bring on the baby!
Are you excited for Jane to, uh, no longer be a virgin at some point? She certainly has some handsome love interests…
I do like that Jane is going to stick to [her beliefs], but I am very interested in seeing when that happens; what is it going to look like, is it going to be the way she imagines, is it going to be beautiful, is it going to be the right person. Obviously, hopefully, she’ll marry the right person….
Which of your two love interests are you, Gina, rooting for, Michael or Rafael?
I go back and forth because you do see Michael’s heart. My thing is that Jane doesn’t know Michael has been sleeping with Nadine. I think it would change the way she feels about Michael, but Michael is the man that waited for me, who knew me, knew my heart.
You’ll see how her relationship grows with Rafael, how much more that’s a reminder to her — we miss what was comfortable and safe. So you’re going to see Jane have those moments of doubt, but Jane is very loyal, and I love that about her. She keeps her mind very focused, and she doesn’t want to lead people on.
But when pressed, who do you pick?
Well, I do go back and forth — but I am definitely Team Rafael right now.
How has your life changed since breaking out in Jane the Virgin, for which you recently won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy?
For me, not much. I have a one bedroom apartment … and I flew my parents in from Puerto Rico for the Golden Globes. I wanted my parents nearby so I gave them my bedroom. It was VERY humbling getting ready for the Golden Globes and sleeping on my couch the night before!
But the beautiful change in my life isn’t really possessions. I haven’t bought anything big or grand, and my boyfriend is still the same (Henri Esteve of Revenge), and my family keeps me grounded. But what has changed is my ability to help people…to financially help my family, that means a lot to me [choking up in tears], to help my grandmother, to help my sister move to L.A., to help my nieces and nephews go to better schools…that is the best blessing.
Where are you keeping your Golden Globe trophy?
Hopefully, I’ll build a shelf or something, right? But for now it’s on my dining table…
But this entire experience has been so amazing. There’s definitely something to be said for having the confidence of walking in that room [at the Golden Globes ceremony] and feeling like you belong.
Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
