Five years ago this week, on June 25, 2009, iconic actress Farrah Fawcett died. Coverage of her death became quickly overshadowed with the stunning announcement of Michael Jackson’s death a few hours later.
Back in 1976, Farrah Fawcett posed for a poster photo shoot sporting a simple red one-piece suit, a beautiful smile, and a feathered shag hairstyle that sent legions of women and girls to salons to emulate. In fact her mane was so popular that it spawned a Farrah Fawcett shampoo. As for the poster, it sold millions (and is still available for sale today), launching Fawcett’s career sky-high. In 2011, the bathing suit was given to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History by her one-time husband Ryan O’Neal.
On screen, Fawcett was probably best known for her role as “Jill Monroe” on the popular TV series Charlie’s Angels alongside two other beauties, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith.
Fawcett was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and ultimately succumbed to the disease on June 25, 2009. Hours later, it was announced that Michael Jackson had died and tributes to the actress were eclipsed by coverage of the pop singer.
