Zac Efron to Play Serial Killer Ted Bundy

The ‘Baywatch’ star has signed on for a sinister role in the upcoming biopic ‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.’

Zac Efron will soon be flashing his famous six-pack in the Baywatch reboot, which hits theaters next week. But for Efron, known for appearing in comedies including Neighbors and Dirty Grandpa, has signed on to take a more sinister turn, playing notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, in the upcoming biopic Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.

Bundy’s grizzly acts horrified the country in the 1970s when he brutally murdered at least 30 young women in several states, although the gruesome tally of his victims was suspected to be higher. His outward persona was described in a New York Times article reporting the case as the “All-American boy” who looked “rather Kennedyeqsue,” a cool exterior which hid one of the most heinous killers in the country’s history. Although he appealed his death sentence for years, Bundy was executed in Florida’s electric chair in 1989.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile will be directed by Joe Berlinger, who is known for his 1996 documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills and its sequels, which chronicle the murder trials of Jessie Misskelley, Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin, three teenagers known as the West Memphis Three. A script by Michael Werwie incorporates the perspective of Bundy’s longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer. Shooting is set to begin in October.
